We returned to Skye Shepherd Huts for the umpteenth time as we love it there so much. Janet has become a friend who we look forward to seeing each time. It is the most wonderful getaway and break from pressures of life. We love the donkeys Gilbert and George and the hens and cats and the peace. We can't wait to return.

Tips:

Cafe Sia in Broadford is good for lunch. Take a trip down to Elgol and go out on the Bella Jane for a wonderful experience.

Such a great time getting cozy in the small hut. Lovely to get to know the boys (Georgie and Milt) who are too funny! Janet, we appreciate your prompt messaging and good hospitality. It made us feel very welcome, and it made getting there the first time much easier.

Tips:

Don’t hesitate to contact Janet to make sure you get more directions to the place if you need them. It’s way out there. If you feel the hut shake a bit, it’s probably the mules or the rams. They like to scratch themselves hehe. Not much space in the hut, keep the large bags in the car.

We stayed tree days in Skye and enjoyed to sleep in a beautiful and confortable hut ! The hut has washbasin, heater, and a little fridge. We appreciated the common hut where we could cook, take shower and stay in sofa reading books. It's nice also to exit outside and meet the animals (donkeys, chickens...).

We had a marvellous time at Janet's place. It is a timeless place, surrounded by wilderness and incredible views. The accommodation was perfectly clean, and the common area had everything we needed, whether it be for cooking, travelling maps of the Isle of Skye, or games. We really enjoyed our time there and thank Janet for everything!

We had a lovely stay here. Everything was so perfect and very relaxed. Exactly what we were looking for. The location is beautiful, the Shepherd huts are so cozy and Janet could not have been more accommodating & welcoming. The donkey’s and chickens roaming add a really nice feel to the whole experience and the eggs from the chickens are sooo tasty! It really was a trip to remember.

Tips:

Be sure to visit the beach at the bottom of the village, the views are amazing & the local shops/restaurants have the most welcoming people and atmosphere.

My shepherd's hut was spotless, cosy and delightfully attractive. There are nature books, information about walks and aces to visit, a hair dryer, DVD player and plenty of electric sockets. There is all the equipment you need in the kitchen and Janet provides food for breakfast and snacks. It's a superb location with lovely views. I enjoyed sitting in the summer house, gazing at the sea and mountains in the distance, reading. The donkeys and the cat there are a bonus. It's a good place to stay if you're holidaying alone - and not everywhere is. Janet is responsive, helpful but not unnecessarily present, as it should be. I definitely plan a return visit.

4th June 2022:

This was the best weekend getaway I've ever had! Janet was so nice, the location was BEAUTIFUL (and close to everything we wanted to see), and the huts themselves were so comfy and cozy. The provided breakfast was also great!! Fresh eggs and very thoughtfully-prepared hampers for our stay. I've been raving about this accommodation for the whole week to friends and coworkers. And the animals are so sweet! I've grown up with barn animals but I've never seen donkeys, cats, and chickens so excited to see people. It was magical from start to finish.

Tips:

It's really only a short drive to all of the major spots from here, especially Portree (and the Trotternish peninsula as a whole), and way less crowded. If you want a nice, nature-filled stay away from loads of tourists this is the best spot! And do talk the walk down to the beach just on the road in front of the huts. It's gorgeous! The town is also great. All the restaurants had a really fun energy thanks to the great people who live there!

We very much enjoyed our stay, from the warm welcome Janet gave us upon arriving after a long wet ride on the motorcycle to our departure in the very early morning, when Gilbert & George, the two donkeys, bid us farewell! It is a wonderful place to unwind and the perfect “base camp” to discover the island.

Tips:

Claimor seems to be a very nice restaurant for seafood in Broadford (Janet can give you the directions) - but make sure to reserve a table before you go!

We loved our stay at the Skye Shepherd Huts! The location was beautiful and the huts were easy to find, with facilities nearby (restaurants, petrol station and shop). Janet had thought of everything, the picnic breakfast was plentiful and just what we wanted as we could eat at our leisure. The bothy kitchen/bathroom was clean and warm and well-equipped. The hut was really cosy and warm, and local information and maps were really useful. Janet was on hand if we had any questions too. We loved seeing the donkeys, chickens and of course Thomas the cat!

We had the most wonderful stay at Bothan Beileag on the Isle of Skye! My husband and I stayed for 3 nights with our boxer dog Eric. The Shepherds hut was beautiful and included lots of thoughful additions to help make our stay that bit more relaxing. Janet was incredibly helpful and welcoming (as were the two donkeys, George and Gilbert)! It was so handy having the cooking and fridge facilities in the Big Shed and it also meant we could play a boardgame when the weather wasn't so nice. Janet provided a range of items for our continental breakfast, including fresh eggs, yoghurts, bread, fresh fruit and smoked salmon. Overall, we had a really lovely time and didn't want to leave. It was by far our favourite stay of our whole Scotland roadtrip!

Tips:

We went paddleboarding with Scotland SUP Co and took our dog Eric. They move around different locations on Skye and the nearby area - we did our session in Plockton (just the other side of the Skye bridge) and it was awesome. Would definitely recommend! We enjoyed visiting the Fairy Glen. We also went to the Fairy Pools around 6ish and it was a great time to avoid the crowds; however, you NEED midge spray otherwise you'll get eaten alive!

Lovely surroundings and a morning hello from the donkeys was great too! The kitchen area had absolutely everything we needed with a lovely shower room. Such a warm welcome from Janet on our arrival. We didn’t want to leave and can’t wait to return!

Tips:

Great walk to Prince Charlie’s cave at Elgol, lovely lunch at Amy’s cafe. Friendly staff and delicious cake. Indian at Kyle was lovely, took a takeaway back to enjoy at the bench outside our hut. Armadale Castle and gardens well worth a visit, cafe there very good too. Broadford has everything you need in way of supplies and just along the road.

We had a wonderful stay in Heast with Janet. Gorgeous location, very well organised and catered for, the cabins were perfect with the best views compared to anywhere else we stayed in Skye (Isle of Rum to the right, Loch Hourn to the left). The shared kitchen was very well furnished. Mostly we were very grateful for all the local knowledge and tips that Janet was able to provide!

We were four friends travelling together and we hired both shepherd huts. We wanted the experience of staying in a shepherds hut and we weren’t let down. The beds were comfortable and the hut was very well thought out, utilising all the nooks and crannies for useful practical things you should need to make your stay comfortable. In addition to our huts we had use of a communal kitchen/bathroom and lounge. This worked out very well for us as we didn’t have to share these facilities with people we didn’t know so well. We enjoyed having the free range donkeys and chickens around us.

22nd October 2019:

We really enjoyed our stay at Skye Shepherds Huts on the Isle of Skye. The hut we stayed in was beautifully decorated and cosy. In mid October, the weather was starting to get cold but it was lovely to come back to the hut and get a fire going in the small wood burner stove and watch a film from the selection provided on the DVD player in the hut. The bed is a standard size double bed and very comfortable. Toilet and power shower solely for the use of guests is a 1 minute walk away. There is also a separate kitchen, living room space and additional toilet for use by guests which we didn't use as we had lunch and dinner out but was nice to know it was available if we needed it. Janet, our host, was very welcoming and introduced us to her various pets who were a joy to interact with. Gilbert and George the donkeys are wonderful, as are the cats and dog. The chickens are such characters and would often follow us to wherever we were going on the property. Also have to mention that breakfast was a treat delivered by Janet every morning. Eggs are provided by the resident hens and lovely and fresh. Skye itself is beautiful with many interesting walks to go. We are so pleased to have based ourselves at Skye Shepherds Huts as for us it was a big part of the whole experience being on the island.Thank you Janet for your 5*hospitality.

Tips:

We flew to Inverness and drove to Skye and the route we took went past Loch Ness which was beautiful and the rest of the drive was very scenic so it is worth taking that route either there or back. In Skye, we had planned to do the Quiraing walk near Staffin but the further North we went, the bleaker the weather got. We managed 15 minutes before turning back as it's quite slippery and dangerous in adverse weather conditions. It was a shame as it provides some really amazing views but that's nature for you. Anyone planning a walk at this time of year should make sure to bring a warm waterproof jacket, trousers, wooly hat, gloves and solid walking boots. We also really enjoyed the An Corran walk from Columba 1400 (also in Staffin) down to An Corran beach where at low tide you might see a fossilised dinosaur footprint. The walk itself is about 1hr 30 mins and very picturesque. Throughout our stay we had a couple of dinners at the Claymore Inn at Broadford. Deli Gasta does lovely breakfasts, lunches, cakes and coffee. We had a phenomenal trip to Skye and would love to return at some point in the future.

I had a lovely stay in the shepherds hut. Very well equipped and everything thought off. Lovely and cosy with the stove on. Breakfast arrives in a wicker basket and has your choice in and is very tasty.Gilbert and George the donkeys are so friendly. A good workout walk down the road to the shoreline view is stunning. A great place to relax.

I've been following the Skye Shepherd Huts on Facebook for many years. I've a photo on my dream board... This year it came true a present from my sister. The Huts did not disappoint cosy and compact, for me just perfect. The toilets and shower only a short stroll away. Also there's the Hutters kitchen and sitting room with everything you need. Not forgetting the lovely summer house with stunning views. (perfect for an evening G&T) Janet the owner was warm welcoming and has plenty of useful information and many books on Skye you can borrow while you are there. A fantastic host thank you Janet for making our story so wonderful. Breakfast is delivered to the huts in a lovely wicker basket we had fresh coffee, muesli, yoghurt, fruit and croissants... yummy! I also need to mention about the very friendly neighbours George and Gilbert the resident Donkeys who often popped by to say hello... All part of what made our stay so special

Tips:

We had lovely meal at the Red Skye restaurant (the entrance is round the back) https://www.redskyerestaurant.co.uk There's a petrol station and a Co-op in Broadford not far from the Shepherds Huts. https://www.isleofskye.com/broadford

Lovely location in an area which is out of the way but still close enough to several restaurants and a large coop. I would highly recommend the breakfast which has a lovely touch. The huts are spacious and the additional kitchen and lounge area make home cooking easy. There’s a barbecue area already set up and a fire pit and external seating upside the hut. Janet is a very helpful hostess and nothing is too much trouble. The site is small and ideally situated for island wide travel. I’m looking forward to my next visit.

Tips:

There are so many places to visit and see. Some are hard to find but again you can get lots of good information from Janet. The old man of Storr is a strenuous hike but the views are lovely and well worth the pain.

If you are looking for something different and special then you must stay at the Shepherd Huts. The huts themselves are very well equipped, everything that you need for a short stay wirh additional cooking facilities nearby if you need them. The setting is very beautiful with fantastic views. Waking up to meet George and Gilbert (the lovely donkeys) is a memory that we will cherish for a long time...along with the chickens and Thomas the most friendly cat in the world. When we arrived we were met by Janet the owner who showed us around the hut and explained things and then left us to enjoy. In the morning Janet brings out your breakfast to your hut which was really nice and set us up well for the day. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to be back soon.....p.s....If you are planning a stay remember to take a big bag of carrots with you....George and Gilbert love them!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a Shepherds’ Hut. The Hut is so quaint but has more mod cons than ever expected that it made for a characterful and comfy stay. Facilities include mains electricity, electric heater and lights, kettle, sink and best of all a wood burning stove. We generally ate out but also cooked a meal in the separate kitchen facility - which is so well equipped you could host a banquet there. Janet was extremely helpful and friendly; if camping/glamping is your thing then we couldn’t recommend Skye Shepherd Huts enough!

Wow We have always wanted to stay in a Shepherds hut and I don’t think there can be any better appointed in all aspects than Skye Shepherds Huts. The huts are truly 5 star with every accessory you can think of. Think ... Denby crockery. Hot and cold running water, wood burning stove, Dyson air blade fan heater, linen bedding, hair dryer, soft lighting, usb charging station, genuine Harris Tweed cushions and much much more!! Janet has honestly not skimped and everything oozes quality. The toilets are are short walk and are in a annex to the main house which is kept warm and cozy. There is a shower here with abundant hot water - but the flow is slightly lacking. Also on the Property is an area for cooking which includes a fully - and I mean FULLY - equipped kitchen, eating area and casual lounge. This also has a loo. The whole area was excellent if you plan to cook rather than eat out. Also on site is a quaint summer house with draw dropping views. Breakfast is delivered to the hut every morning and we chose the cooked option for a small supplement. The peresention in a wicker basket and “tiffin tins” is inspired and all the additions and condiments were individually packaged. Very impressive. Janet the host is courteous, friendly and warm and goes out of her way to ensure your stay is memorable. My fears about being chilly were totally unfounded. The huts are well insulated and draft free and the wood burning stove raised the inside temperature to sauna levels very quickly indeed - so much so we had to open windows and doors to cool off more than once!!! If your planning a trip to Skye then Skye Shepherds huts really should be high on your agenda to stay at. I thoroughly reccomend them.

Tips:

Eat at the Claymore just down the road. Excellent food and what has to be the most friendly and personable service we have ever encountered.

I booked here because I liked the look of the shepherd huts plus they are willing to accept dogs. The minute I saw inside the hut I fell in love with it, there's a double bed, sink, fridge, plates and cutlery (and a mini DVD player, should you fancy that) There's also a log burner, which after being out in the Scottish weather made a good finish to the day. The bathroom is shared, but is only a short distance from the hut. There is also a shared kitchen/living area which looked great.

Tips:

The Shepherd Huts are about a 10-15 minute drive from Broadford, where there is a supermarket, petrol station, a few gift shops and places to eat. I went to the Waterfront chippy and would recommend there.

This was the most beautiful and peaceful place to stay. Wonderful host, nothing too much trouble. Everything was perfect down to the smallest detail. Little hobbit stove in the hut was fab! So warm and cosy. The breakfast was excellent quality, highly recommend the porridge with a tot of whisky.... Simply delicious. Extremely clean throughout and a very comfortable bed. The views were stunning and the donkeys Gilbert and George adorable. We will definitely be back!

Tips:

Lots of lovely restaurants serving local seafood... Delicious! Hill walkers paradise! Large co-op in Broadford, petrol station, chemist. Craft shops, boat trips, distillery so much to see and do.

Janet is a brilliant host. We had a fantastic time and loved having our breakfasts delivered every morning. The hut is perfect and lying in bed overlooking Rum was such a treat. Maggie our dog also had fun, acquainting herself with the donkeys and a night by the fire with Janet and her gorgeous dogs while we galavanted to Kinloch Lodge.

9th September 2016:

What a find! Loved the location and amazing views from the hut. The Hut was exceptionally cosy and had everything that was needed over our 3 night stay. The DVD player in the little box was a fab idea and enjoyed picking a DVD from the library in the porch area of Janet's house. Even though we had to share a bathroom it was easy and everyone was respectful of space and cleanliness. The bathroom and huts are spotless and We have no complaints. Very dog friendly and this really made our holiday. Loved the fact that there were a variety of animals that were welcoming and all very chilled out. Finally the breakfast is amazing and a lot of thought has gone into making this a perfect place to stay on Skye. We will return!

Tips:

Definitely book a visit to the Three Chimneys restaurant, the drive is worth it! A fantastic culinary delight. We tagged onto Lunch a visit to Dunvegan Castle and the Coral Beaches. One word, beautiful! We walked the dogs in a number of places including Glen Brittle, Broadford and Kylerhea! Just be respectful to the sheep/cattle farmers and keep dogs on the lead when walking near fields etc. There is so much to see and do. I would advise to plan your day before heading out to make the most of this beautiful place!

Owner Response:

For future guests information I am correcting the information above regarding towels.i supply a large number of single use cotton hand towels by the bathroom sink, and a small basket on the floor for used towels. I prefer this method to paper towels or hand dryers, as they are washed and reused and do not litter a shared bathroom. I can only imagine that this guest did not understand what the bale of hand towels on the glass top shelf was for.

Our recent stay at the Skye Shepherd Hut was fantastic; my husband had booked it as a surprise for our Anniversary & what a great choice it was. I would highly recommend it, from the moment we arrived Janet came out and gave us a warm welcome. We were shown to our Hut which was beautifully decorated to a high standard with some lovely homely touches & a shabby chic design, she had thought of everything. The location was beautiful & easy to find, Janet was always on hand if we needed anything. The resident Donkeys’, Gilbert & George were friendly & being an animal lover I was in my element, alongside the chickens roaming the grounds. Each morning a lovely picnic basket was delivered with a wide selection of hot & cold breakfast items which we had chosen the night before. We had a lovely relaxing stay & will defiantly be visiting again, if your contemplating a visit don't give it a second though just book...it's a little piece of tranquillity on a beautiful island.

Tips:

We have been to Skye quite a few times but never to the Southern part of the Island. I'd recommend the following book....Isle Of Skye - 40 Coast & Country Walks (Pocket Books)for a wide selection of walks all over Skye. We ate in CafeSia in Broadford a casual cafe which is advisable to book a table as it does get very busy & I'd recommend any of the Wood Fired Pizza's, if you wish to head a little further afield (over the Skye bridge) to the village of Plockton the Plockton Inn do the most amazing seafood & the village is beautiful.

Tips:

Cafe Sia was great for pizza, we had a lovely meal there and they have free wifi which was a bonus as our phones were temperamental at best! We also did the boat trip with Misty Isle to Loch Coruisk! Highly recommended!!

We had a lovely stay in Janet's Shepherd Hut for 2 nights. The location and huts are very unique and despite torrential rain and heavy gusts during our stay the huts were very cosy and the lovely hobbit stove kept us very warm. Janet was very accommodating and helpful - doing a wash for us as we were nearing the end of a one week tour of Scotland - and delivered a hearty breakfast to our huts which was delicious. Janet was very attentive and friendly throughout, while at the same time leaving us to our own devices to come and go as we please. It is a gorgeous location and a unique setting and holiday which adds and extra element to the holiday. We would highly recommend it to anyone and it was lovely to meet Janet who looked after us extremely well. Thank you! :)

A real 'get away from it all' place, we spent 7 nights there!. It's like we died and went to heaven. The hut was small and very cosy with loads of little things supplied to make our stay really comfortable. Janet was a terrific host and the breakfast every morning was beautiful and wholesome. The little stove in the hut warmed the hut within a few minutes on the one cold evening we had to light it. Matches, kindling, fire lighters and wood to burn were all supplied too.

Tips:

We ate most nights in an restaurant at the end of our road (4 miles) called the Claymore which was lovely and the service and staff could not be faulted.....even to the point where we were offered and given a glass of wine on the house when they knew we were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary!!! We did quiet a bit of touring around the south part of the island and once you leave the main road, driving is a bit more hazardous but stay alert and all will be fine. A trip to the island of canna from elgol is worth it to see the bird life and we were lucky enough to have Dolphins swim along side the boat on our return. We would liked to have spent longer than 1 and a half hours on the island but time didn't allow that. The scenery is breathtaking and there are plenty of well marked walks (easy to the more strenuous) all within an hours drive or so of the huts.

Please feel free to use the following as a review on any of your listings: We had an absolutely fantastic night in Janets shepherds hut! It's just a shame that we couldn't spend more time there. The hut itself is great. We stayed in February, but despite the cold outside, the log burner kept us plenty toasty enough. It is packed with everything you could need too. Location wise - the setting is stunning. The view over the lochs and mountains in the morning was simply breathtaking. We went for the Cooked breakfast in the morning which Janet brought to us in little bento type boxes. Never had a breakfast quite like it in terms of presentation. Simply superb. We look forward to going back one day, and will certainly recommend it to our friends. Martin Granger
