Beautiful cottage in an excellent location. Very comfortable and well equipped and comes with a menagerie of pretty birds that love to be fed.
Tips:Red Skye restaurant, over the bridge is delicious, but very busy. Get there early to avoid disappointment. For an interesting breakfast/brunch, Lean To café on Skye is a great stop with really friendly staff. Dunvegan castle is worth a visit. The grounds are stunning. And, if you don't mind risking the drive, Fairy Pools is definitely worth a visit.

Our stay was absolutely perfect here! Beautiful location, quiet and peaceful. The only thing... it was too short. We don't want to leave. 😅
Tips:Most people are looking for the big things like Old Men of Storr. But don't forget the surrounding. In Kyle of Lochals you'll find The Plock. Or even the backyard of the lodge! It's so beautiful there. We did one day a big/intensive thing and the other day something close by. In Kyle of Lochals and Balmacara you'll find supermarkets with all the thins you'll need. Max 5 and 10 minutes away from the lodge. You're even close by Isle of Sky for more options.

We've been in many holiday cottages in the UK over the last 10+ years but this has surely been one of my favorites. The setting is stunning, you can see the tide change from your doorstep. Situated near many top attractions and wonderful countryside, it's a great base to explore this part of scotland from. The house itself is comfy and very cozy, with tasteful modern furnishings and a well equipped kitchen. The complementary fresh eggs and delicious brownies made the warm welcome by the owners even better. So all in all extremely high recommended.
Tips:The seafood restaurant in the kyle of lochalsh railway station. Call for a booking as it is small but it's wonderful!

Tips:For garden lovers, Attadale is a must. Driving north to Applecross and Shieldaig - stunning scenery and deserted roads. Don’t discount local walks - best one is along the lane from the cottage. Good food shops in Reraig and Kyle. Be prepared for traffic queues on Skye.

Shinglebay is a beautifully decorated and comfortable cottage. David and Lisa are excellent hosts and Griff, the dog, is eager to play. We have stayed here 3 times and found it it to be a wonderful place to destress and relax. An excellent base for exploring the Isle of Skye and the North West Coast.
Tips:As we travel north by car, we stop at the Morrison’s in Fort William en route, to stock up with provisions and (cheaper) petrol. There are also supermarkets in Kyle of Lockalsh and Broadford on the Isle of Skye, where there is a cheap fuel station. A trip over the Bealach and lunch at the Applecross Inn is a must do as is a visit to Eileen Donan castle.

26th September 2021:
We had such a lovely stay at Shinglebay Cottage. The weather was rubbish (it is Scotland after all) so we spent a fair time very pleasantly indoors. Such a lovely location. A lovely wee welcome pack from David and Lisa on arrival and eggs from their hens and some great runner beans from the garden! The place was spotlessly clean, warm and cosy with such a lovely feel to it! Thank you so much! The hills will be there still, when we next visit!
Tips:We had come specifically for a hill week! It rained most days but we still got out and about and instead of the mountains we had come to Kintail to climb, we had some lovely upland, forest and glen walks! It was great to just be amongst the mountains.

We enjoyed a wonderful holiday. The cottage is in an excellent location and is clean, modern and well equipped. The hosts are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. We had a supply of fresh free-range eggs all week which was brilliant and we loved walking their Dog! We would not hesitate to come back.
Tips:An excellent location. Prawns in Plockton highly recommended and a boat trip from Portree - we saw dolphin! Try the turntable ferry at Glenelg - brilliant! Beaches at Sandaig are gorgeous. Bring binoculars to watch all the seabirds around the cottage and enjoy walks along the shore when the tide is out. We had a kayak and we had direct access to the water from the cottage which was perfect.

We had a wonderful stay in this immaculate and very well-equipped cottage. The walks along the shore were beautiful (thanks for the wellies!) and were made even better with some fantastic sunny weather. The hosts, Lisa and David, couldn’t have been nicer or more welcoming and we were delighted with the welcome pack they provided. We would love to come back soon.
Tips:We visited Manuela’s bakery (in a German fairyland style) about a couple of miles down the road which was delightful. Local area drives- a drive to Glenelg with the 5 minute ferry to south of Skye was a scenic treat. Walks in and around slighahan on Skye and trips to Plockton were highlights. A coffee in the cafe in Duirnish with the local highland cattle ambling around was fun too! One of our favourite stops was the Eileen Iarmain hotel in isleornsay for a drink while watching the boats bob on the water in very beautiful surroundings. A peaceful way to end some afternoons. I’m sure we’ve still got loads more to discover!

18th October 2020:
Everything I had read was true: Shinglebay Cottage is perfect. We have just left after an amazing week. The cottage is beautiful, very well maintained, so comfortable and spotless (Covid measures are second to none). The kitchen has everything you could need and the starter pack of coffee, tea, fresh eggs, wine and homemade cake was most welcome. Lisa and David have thought of everything. Twice this week we were able to sit out to view the night sky and even saw a shooting star, it was fabulous. The loch can be viewed from the cottage and a few steps take you to its edge - it is beautiful. The area is amazing: dramatic and ever changing scenery. There are so many places to visit and you can be in Skye in minutes. We loved Shinglebay so much that we have booked to return in the spring. Thanks for a magical week David and Lisa.
Tips:Because of lockdown many restaurants are doing carryout meals. Lisa gave us tips on the best ones. One surprise was Manuela's Wee Bakery - bakery by day and great pizzas made to order in the evening. Beautiful, quaint place. Lots of beautiful vilages to visit and Plockton is a must. A few minutes will take you to Kyleakin in Skye but the whole island is easily accessible. The whole region is breathtaking.

We loved our stay at Shinglebay Cottage despite the weather not being kind to us. A wonderful location right next to a beautiful loch and the owners David and Lisa were so helpful and close by. A lovely home made ginger cake, wine and eggs on our arrival was a lovely touch. The cottage is very comfortable, spacious and well equipped. It’s the perfect location to explore Skye, Lochalsh and the Applecross peninsular. We chose the location as perfect to go off in so many directions. Particularly loved Glenelg and the lovely drive over there. A must for anyone staying at Shinglebay. This area of The highlands takes your breath away and is highly recommended.
Tips:Lovely lunch at The Glenelg Inn, Glenelg is beautiful. Drive further along that coast to Corran and try tea and cake at Sheenas tea hut. A lovely spot. Also drive across the Pass of the Cattle to Applecross. From there drive to Shieldaig, then Torridon and take a hairy drive along a single track road to Lower Diabeg. Such a pretty place.

Lovely, friendly couple who were on hand if we needed anything. It was heartening to see how much work you had put in to ensure the cottage was safe to stay in in these Covid times. The place was spotless and the little touches like plastic covers on the remote controls reassured that you take hygiene very seriously. Thank you for the welcome pack of essentials like tea and coffee, biscuits and wine, which was very welcome after a long drive!
Tips:Shinglebay cottage is in a beautiful location, perfect for exploring the surrounding mainland and the Isle of Skye (a car is essential!). Places to eat - There weren’t many restaurants open when we were there, but we ordered from the local Chinese and Indian takeaways and one day had lunch at the Plockton Inn. Places to go - next to the cottage itself is a lovely rocky bay to explore. You can walk across (in wellies) at low tide and it’s a great place to skim stones. Griff the dog will show you the way to go! The famous Eilean Donan castle is a 5 minute drive and well worth a visit. If you have good weather, a trip to Applecross beach is a must. It’s about an hour’s drive around a very steep and winding mountain road, but absolutely worth it for the gorgeous Caribbean like sandy beach. Plockton, with its palm trees, is around a half hour drive away. It’s a beautiful little place. Finally, a few trips to the Isle of Skye is clearly essential. The bridge is 10 mins from the cottage and so much to see and do once there. We visited the dinosaur footprints at Staffin and the warrior queen Scátach’s castle on the site of Dun Scáith.

My parents and I booked a fairly last minute stay at Shinglebay and really couldn't have had a better experience. The cottage is beautiful and very comfortable, and the owners, Lisa and David, were the best hosts, leaving us a really nice welcome spread of homemade chocolate cake, fresh eggs from their own hens, and a bottle of wine. They even left us notes on recommendations for things to see and do on the Isle of Skye and beyond which was just the icing on top of an already wonderful stay.
Tips:The cottage is within driving distance of lots of things to do and see. We enjoyed dinner at the Dornie Hotel, the Hebridean Inn, and the Eilean Iarlain Hotel bar. We enjoyed visiting the local Talisker and Torrabhaig distilleries, and the drives getting to both of them, including seeing the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing.

Location was perfect for our needs. Recommended walks where good and also easy to access. David and Lisa where extremely welcoming and helpful. There was a lovely welcoming package on our arrival. The cottage was very clean and equipped for all our needs. Overall a fantastic week away in a great place.
Tips:Drive to Applecross is a must if you are a confident driver to make the journey, stop at Applecross Inn for lunch, very good and value for money. Plockton is a nice little retreat, not done the boat trip yet, but has been recommended. Skye is a must see, the scenery is breathtaking over the Qurrang. Neist point is a great walk and breathtaking scenery.

Advice on arrival superb. Welcome from owner. Out of this world. Daily contact if you desire it. Advice on otters, deer or other wildlife. Easy.
Tips:Plockton Shores by way and above the best meal of the week. Just follow your nose to find beautiful sites. If booking early Loch Bay must be booked early by several weeks. Envious, yes we were too late!

Many thanks for your friendly hospitality. Cakes and eggs delicious! MUCH better with heating off, even in the cooler 2 weeks that we had. A tea cosy would be useful and so would a potato masher (but Jean is an old fashioned cook!). The large scale OS maps were useful. We are still mystified by the "wash basin". Is it supposed to hold water? What is the porcelain plug thing for? Cleaning teeth over it was a pot luck experience - bend forward and your head hits the tap and turns it off or scalds you! I know you can't easily change it and I presume it was a daft idea of the previous owners but if we are missing something, please tell us for next time!! Thanks again, best wishes to you both and to Griff. Good luck to your son for re-sit Maths.

The best hosts you could probably have, a wonderful place with every facility that you would need while away, it's like a home away from home. The surrounding area is beautiful and varied.
Tips:The pubs in Donnie serve great food, the seafood restaurant in the Kyle of lochalsh is one of the best we have eaten in. There are a number of wonderfully varied castles in the area and on the Isle of Skye itself. Kilt rock and the Old Man of Storr and surrounding area are beautiful places to visit. Try and give everything ago there is enough for everyone to find something they enjoy. Most of all relax and enjoy yourself.

We spent a wonderful week at Shingle Bay Cottage at the end of August. What a place! Lisa and David were wonderful hosts and we were made extremely welcome by them both. Everything in the cottage was explained to us personally by them and they also supplied us a homemade ginger cake, fresh eggs and a bottle of wine, very thoughtful. The cottage is spotlessly clean and equipped to a very high standard. The location is excellent for touring the highlands and Skye. Most of all the setting of Shingle Bay cottage is idyllic, so peaceful with stunning scenery everywhere you looked and only a short walk from the cottage to the loch. Thank you Lisa and David for making our stay so memorable and loaning us for wellies to go across the loch to the “secret beach”. We would recommend this stunning cottage and hope to return

David is a great host. Gave us lots of info on what to visit. For welcome, we found some eggs and a bottle of wine. Cake came later in the afternoon. We took the recipe home and it is our favourite bake now. He has a big map of skye in the B&B. It is worthwhile to go there and have him give you some tips.
Tips:Great place to stay. Don't only focus on visiting the obvious attractions on the lovely island of Skye. There is plenty to see on the mainland also. Plockton Inn has great food and a nice terrace by the beach. Also worthwhile visiting the Attadale gardens and then move over the cattle pass to visit apple cross. Very nice pub there also. Spend a nice afternoon at the beach there.

Shingle Bay is a perfectly equipped and comfortable place to relax and unwind. It is situated on the edge of Lochalsh across which you can walk at low tide and explore the rocky islands. It is perfectly positioned to travel around the western highlands and Skye and a joy to return to at the end of the day. Lisa and David are very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Perfect hosts in fact. There is so much in the area to see and do, and Lisa and David made many recommendations; we enjoyed visiting the otter hide at Kylerhea and dinner at the Plockton Inn. But as avid fossil hunters the highlight for us was a trip to the dinosaur beaches and museum at the very north of Skye, followed by lunch at the delightfully positioned Flodigarry hotel where we sat outside and ate Cullen Skink while admiring the view and the perfect peace. A wonderful holiday.

If you want a cottage in this part of Scotland, you will not find better. Very clean, comfy beds and everything you need to make your stay enjoyable. friendly and helpful owner made us feel very welcome and gave us useful, local information.
Tips:Good Spar supermarket within a mile and good pub serving food two miles in the other direction. The cottage feels as if you are miles from everything but it isn't! Plockton is a short drive away and the lovely castle Eilean Donan only two miles. Lovely walk from the cottage to Ardnish point means on one day you don't even have to move the car.

Lovely quiet location. Fabulous views. Cottage warm and welcoming. The most comfortable super-king size bed. Short walk to the shore of Loch Alsh. Hosts are very friendly and approachable, but never intrusive. The homemade scones and jam, fresh eggs from their chickens and a bottle of wine on arrival was very welcome. Highly recommend a stay here, you won't be disappointed.
Tips:Lots of scenery within easy driving distance. Photographers paradise! Isle of Skye is a must. The bridge over is only 7 miles away. Sea trips from Kyle of Lochalsh and Plockton. The drive over 'The pass of the cattle' to Applecross on a clear day...not for the faint hearted! Amazing views from the summit. Also Mam Ratagan Pass to Glenelg and Arnisdale. Very friendly and welcoming hosts. Having the owners close by might be a bit off putting for some people ie those seeking to enjoy the peace and quiet of the lochside without interruption. The photos on the website gave the impression that Shinglebay cottage had more of a view of the water whereas in reality it was Seadrift B&B that had the better location.
Tips:The city link bus service along the A87 was good. A day return from Nostie (road end) to Portree on Skye made a lovely day out and was £13.50 per adult. A 20 minute drive to Plockton, a must to enjoy this pretty conservation village and take an hour boat trip with Callum to see the Seals. Walk a short way to enjoy the Coral Beach - beautiful.
