What an absolute delight it was to stay in the Byre. Everything we needed was just there. We even got to see the Aurora Borealis.

Tips:

Make sure to go outside when it’s dark and listen to the silence and make a photo of the sky with a longer exposure. Just to check.

The most beautiful location with the most expansive views. The house is so beautifully appointed, you will want for nothing!

Tips:

The walks from the house along the cliffs are spectacular. Staffin beach was such fun searching for dinosaur footprints. Columba 1400 was a great spot for lunch, with friendly staff and delicious food. Never at a loss for things to do on Skye!

2nd November 2024:

We stayed in the Old Croft House and it was just brilliant. Everything we needed was there and we were able to relax and enjoy the stunning views. We were really comfortable and our dog Ruby was also right at home there. The house was in a really good location for exploring the north side of Skye and is a fairly short drive to Portree and Uig. We would love to go back again soon!

Tips:

Tips for EV drivers: travelling to Skye with a EV was very easy with a little forward planning. For non Tesla drivers, there are a number of Tesla chargers open to all EV’s now so I would recommend registering on the Tesla app in advance and checking which ones you can use on your route, they tend to be a lot cheaper than other brands and also quick so definitely worth it. The chargers at Fort William near Morrisons are particularly handy to use while also stocking up on supplies before the last leg of the journey to Skye. I would also recommend registering in advance of your trip for an account and RFID card with ChargePlace Scotland or Octopus Electroverse as these allow easy use of all the Chargeplace Scotland chargers which are readily available even in remote areas as well as Portree and Uig(visit the Skye Brewery while you charge here :-). Hopefully this will be of help to fellow EV drivers.

21st October 2024:

2nd wonderful visit to the Old Croft House, which has lots to offer. Very much home from home with a few extras. We will be back for our 4th visit next year, our first visit made use of the Byre which was also first class.

Tips:

Walks from the door, and close by including the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing. Uig is 30minute drive away if you need a ferry or to see the Fairy Glen. Portree is 40 to 45 minutes away. No matter where you are on Skye you will need to drive if you want to see all it has to offer. 10 minutes away is Loch Shianta, a small sparkling little piece of water which is lovely to get into if you can manage the cold water.

24th October 2023:

Wow, what a place. The Byre is simply one of the best places we have ever stayed. Furnished and fitted to an extremely high standard we wanted for almost nothing during our 4 days stay in October 23. On entering the property you come into a well equipped utility room that had everything to hand that you could possibly want during your stay (including complimentary washing pods). The utility led to a really well equipped open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area. We literally gasped as we walked through the kitchen and saw the SPECTACULAR view, it was the stuff dreams are made of and proved to be an ever changing perfect picture. There are two bedrooms and bathrooms (one up, one down) and both were beautiful and extremely comfortable. The bed linen was really good quality (which makes for a better nights sleep IMHO). The Byre is pretty remote and the nearest shop for supplies is about 15 minutes drive away (the shop was reasonably well stocked) but we loved the remoteness of it. We had stocked up with groceries etc prior to coming onto Skye so this wasn’t an issue for us. We felt like we were in our own little bit of paradise and spent every afternoon from about 16:00 just sitting in the extremely comfy leather recliners taking in the breathtaking views. We were really lucky with the weather and on one of our days we could even see Lewis and Harris. We would highly recommend The Byre.

Tips:

Visit the Bûrr Skye (a short walk) for takeaway coffee and cake. The girls there are lovely and welcoming (as are all the islanders). Bûrr is a shack coffee shop which was originally featured on Grand Designs (S12/Ep7). Unfortunately for us the Museum of Island Life and Dunvegan Castle were closed when we were there but we have been told both are worth a visit. An Corran beach is about a 20 minute drive away. We didn’t get to see the dinosaur footprints as the tide was in but it was still a lovely place. The small harbour here was really pretty and we saw loads of seals.

9th October 2023:

This is our second stay with you, the first was in the Byre, this time the Old Croft House. The location of the property is just where we wanted it in the North of Skye with views out to sea, and the whole of nature on your doorstep. As with any location on Skye you will need to drive if you want to see all that it has to offer. The Old Croft House was very clean with all the amenities that you would expect and more. All of which adds up to a very comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Tips:

There are a number of walks straight from your door that take you along the coastline. As stated previously a vehicle is necessary to experience Skye. There are local stores in Staffin (20 mins) and Uig (30 mins) and also the Flodigarry Country House Hotel (10 mins) for drinks and food, staff are extremely welcoming. Loch Shianta is 10 minutes away and is an ideal place for a cold water dip or swim if you dare.

21st September 2023:

We found this place perfect as we wanted somewhere off of the beaten track, that gave a true feel of Skye and with a view…and what a view. The bonus was being able to get onto the coast line and walk the cliff tops…from the Byre. You’ll need to use your car to see any of the recommended sites on the Island but the drives are stunning with views at every turn. The accommodation has everything you need from herbs and spices to a slow cooker! A bucket list item was to see the northern lights…and we did…right from the Byre. Definitely fell in love with the place and wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

Tips:

The weather turns quickly so be prepared. It also takes time to get anywhere, so give yourself plenty. Some roads are single track but easy to drive…just be aware of some interesting pot holes. Oh and there will be cattle and sheep using the roads too😂. If you play golf try Isle of Skye Golf Club. Even if it’s a rubbish rounds the views still make you smile. The hosts are incredibly helpful so don’t hesitate to contact them if you need anything. Do shop on your way to the accommodation as the nearest store is a good few miles away.

Ian and Helen are perfect hosts. Questions are answered quickly and our problem with the fridge was directly solved with a good interim solution. Furthermore, the neighbors are very helpful. The Old Croft House is a beautiful house with everything you need and a stunning view. The kitchen is well equipped and the internet is fast. The bedrooms are really nice. And, also very important, the couches are comfortable. We have absolutely nothing to complain about.

Just make a short walk to the sea near the house - there's a little trail along the cliffs, which we recommend.

We absolutely loved our stay. The Old Croft House is a perfect getaway. Plenty of character and the views are spectacular. We just didn’t want to leave! Thank you again Ian and Helen.

Tips:

Andy from Isle of Skye Wildlife Tours is very knowledgeable and gave us a memorable day out seeing otters, golden eagles and sea eagles! We would also recommend Edinbane Lodge and Scorrybreac Restaurant for something special. The Uig Hotel and Restaurant is really nice and the staff very friendly. The Hungry Gull at Staffin do a brilliant takeaway on Fridays and Saturdays. Cafe Arriba in Portree and Bog Myrtle in Struan are great for a light bite. 24th October 2022:

The Byre is one of the very best places we have stayed in from point of view of design, comfort and kit: all wonderful, easy and straightforward. Scored 4 on location because while remoteness is its selling point, that does come with a lot of driving, on often very poor roads. For us it was well worth it. We were lucky that the adjacent Old Croft House was empty for all but one night of the stay - not sure how we'd have felt with such close neighbours given that most of the side of the house facing them is glass.

Tips:

The Byre is very very dog-friendly, but if you have a dog who needs a lot of exercise (we have a spaniel) plan ahead: there are very few places on Skye where you can let the dog off the leash - I thought we were ok waling down to the sea and along the marked path along the cliffs, but on our 3rd day there we found that someone blocked up the doggy access to the cliffside walk, and tied up gates that had been open. This even though we live in farmland and are very sensitive to concerns about livestock. We found that the forest walks were the only places we could let our dog off leash without concern.

Fully equipped kitchen, clean comfy beds and it's a completely weatherproof property. I stayed during a storm and there were no drafts. Temperature stated warm throughout my stay, amazing heating system. Lovely views all round

Tips:

I use walkhighlands to plan hikes, I did the Rubha Hunish circuit walk, The Old Man of Storr, The Fairy Glen, Staffin. Slipway, Neist Point, Coral Beaches. I also did brief stops at Kilt Rock and Leadt Viewpoints. Didn't manage to see the Fairy Pools on the way home as it was raining heavily - next time! Found a great wee cafe Lean to Cafe near the Skye bridge. Lovely toasties and coffee.

The facilities at The Byre were perfect as was its position at the most northern point of Skye. Ian and Helen were very quick to respond to any queries prior to our stay . Helen was in their adjacent property and one evening appeared at our door to make us aware of the Aurora Borealis that was in full display, something we would have missed had she not been so attentive.

Tips:

If you come to Skye you need to be prepared to travel around the island in order to see all it has to offer. There are many sights to see, walks to do and beaches to swim at, if you dare. Our favourite meal is simply Scallops and Chips from The Oyster Shed in Carbost.

The Old Croft House was exactly as we left it four years ago - perfectly maintained inside and with one of the world's most beautiful views outside. We look forward to coming again in the future.

Tips:

Don't try to eat lunch anywhere in the "dark hours" of 2:30-5:30 -- most restaurants shut and you will find yourself very hangry. Bring snacks with you at all times as it always takes longer to get somewhere than you think, and if you miss your lunch reservation you will be sad. Make sure to book several weeks in advance for the most sought after restaurants (Loch Bay, Three Chimneys, etc.). Dinner at Hotel Flodigarry is fantastic but because it is so close you will have a hard time getting a taxi to take you. We took the bus there and one of the bar staff drove us home (for an extra tip).

15th August 2022:

Have steamed at the Old Croft House before and it was spotless, but on arriving it was clear the sunroom hadn’t been cleaned properly. Remains of food on the 2 recliner chairs, as you reclined the chairs out, food, hair in the recess. Underneath the chairs had food and hair also. Cushion on the floor also, also found a card and ribbon under another cushion. The oven in the kitchen hadn’t been cleaned either by the cleaner/previous occupants, the tray in the oven has seen better days. The cleaner has obviously been skimping on her duties, which is a shame as this is a lovely house, but not up to its 5 Star standards.

A pleasure to deal with very easy system for accessing the property, clear detailed directions, a delight to be welcomed with bottles of wine and a local beer. The dogs were given treats and the essential poo bags. Very thoughtful.

Tips:

The restaurants and cafes were excellent we ate at the Uig Hotel, Cuil cafe, Skye skeins yurt and chargrill in Portree. Also got filled rolls from granary bakery in Portree. A lot of the restaurants were fully booked or closed. There is a staff shortage at present.

4th November 2021:

The cottage was warm, clean and comfortable. There was a personalised welcome card with lovely wine and beer for our arrival. There are fantastic views from the large windowed living room. (Also the bathroom upstairs!) Separate TV room with DVD player allowed us to spread out. Comfortable, highbacked leather reclining sofas. 2 ensuite bedrooms upstairs with good showers. Decent sized fridgefreezer. Washing machine. No tim le druer, but there is a decent clothes horse. The main road to Uig is good, then single track with passing places for about 11 miles approx 25mins.

Tips:

Good walks and viewpoints at Duntulm castle ruin and Rubha Hunish. The Gallery Cafe outside Uig looked lovey but was unfortunately full. Uig Hotel restaurant for lunch was very nice. Well stocked Co-ops in Broadford and Portree

Absolutely fantastic croft which has been extremely well fitted out with everything at the highest standard. The views across the bay and back to the Quirang are amazing with a good number of local walks.

Tips:

The croft is situated at the top of the Trotternish peninsula which provides excellent opportunities for spotting wildlife and access to The Old Man of Storr and the Quirang. Sadly, due to Covid, a number of other more local facilities such as cafes and galleries remain closed at the moment. The local roads are mostly single track, but everyone is helpful in allowing traffic to flow both ways. The roads do improve south of Staffin and Uig and the rest of the island is accessible.

10th October 2020:

Helen and Ian were very quick to reply to messages, answering any and all questions. Their hospitality was top-notch, providing bottles of wine and beer, fire wood and even dog waste bags. These little touches really made it feel like we were coming home to the Old Croft House, not staying temporarily in a holiday let. There was an impressive selection of board games, books and DVDs - we took great interest in the books that discussed the history of the Isle of Skye, and Scotland in general. Upon arrival, the cottage was spotless and warm. The views from the sitting room are amazing, and we often just sat back and enjoyed the peaceful surrounding. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was very well equipped. We very much enjoyed the sauna, as well as the views from the bathtub. We loved our time here, and hope to be back before long!

Tips:

The walks and hikes in the surrounding area are absolutely stunning (regardless of weather!). The cliffs just behind the cottage are lovely, and offer breathtaking views of the area. For a slightly longer walk, it is possible to walk along the coast to The Lookout (a small bothy on the Rubha Hunish peninsula). The views are astounding, and with good weather, allow you to see all the way to the Western Isles. A bit further afield, the Quirang hike offers some of the most stunning views of land and sea, and is quite possibly one of the most beautiful hikes we have ever taken. For amenities, the Staffin Store offers quite a complete selection of foods, including prepared meals, fresh fruit and veg, meats, dairy, eggs dry goods, snacks and vegan/vegetarian options, too. The Co-op in Portree is well-stocked with good variety, however there is a much larger supermarket in Broadford, though this is over an hour away. We mostly ate in the cottage, however we did go out for supper once in Portree to Sea Breezes. The food was excellent, but be warned that the menu is limited (3 appetisers, 4 entrees and 3 puddings, with a few specials). The seafood platter for one is easily large enough for two people, especially if you take an appetiser first. Last, if you have a car, driving around the island is one of the best ways to see it in all forms of weather. We loved seeing the different parts of the island.

We enjoyed our short break at The Byre. We weren’t disappointed with the location or the facilities. The bed was very comfortable and the lounge seating was good, and not too low. We appreciated the welcome pack and the little things like soaps and hand sanitiser. We felt that your Covid precautions were very effective.

Tips:

Because of the distance from other places, which was a plus, we didn’t eat out anywhere. But the kitchen provided everything we needed to cook. We enjoy short walks and soaking up the dramatic Skye scenery. This time, we revisited places we had previously enjoyed and we use a book of shorter walks, obtainable widely.

We would certainly recommend the Old Croft House .... the location was stunning and the cottage itself was perfect. A very small point, just to let you know, there appear to be fly infestations in the bedroom windows upstairs... when we opened the windows for the first time we had a small swarm of flies to contend with.

Tips:

We did coasteering in the bay in front of the cottage w Skye Adventures and it was excellent. Sarah was our guide and she couldn’t have been better with the kids. Good kit and felt perfectly safe .... a great few hours.

Thank you for your kind words, they are much appreciated. At each changeover, the bedroom windows are opened to ventilate the cottage. Some flies do stay on the inside of the hinges for a short spell in the late summer. The hinges are swept but a small amount can remain. The room is also fogged as part of our Covid-cleaning. Despite all of this, a few flies can remain on occasion during this brief period.

For a peaceful location on the Trotternish, I don't think you could find better. House is beautifully appointed, extremely comfortable, warm and with amazing views. The vast windows of the new lounge are the real highlight. My only suggestion for improvement would be more hanging hooks/space for wet coats/clothes, and perhaps a heater for the utility room that can be switched on separate to the central heating to help dry wet clothes in there. It does rain quite a bit on the west coast!

This cottage is exceptional. From the location, to the view, to the cleanliness, homeliness and comfort of the cottage itself. The bathroom (bath and sauna) and the feature window in the room we dubbed the "Sun room" were highlights for us. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and the little gifts left for us were delightful. We stay in a lot of cottages and this is without doubt our favourite. Even the neighbours were wonderful, chatting to us as we passed by walking the dogs, suggesting places to visit and things to do, and also lending us a Christmas tree! The owners are also so lovely and very responsive and helpful, going out of their way to help.

Tips:

Walk around the fields and cliff tops straight out of the front door of the cottage. A lot of places are closed for the winter season, which we knew and expected but could be a surprise to others. Drive off the beaten track, pull over and walk - you never know what you might find. And look up! We saw 2 white tailed eagles and a golden eagle which were highlights of our trip

Beautiful cottage in a superb location with views to die for! We loved it. It is very well decorated with high quality furnishings. Lots of extras are provided which is unusual for self catering accommodation. We spent most evenings sat in the living room admiring the view, looking at the wildlife and watching the sun go down. Helen and Ian are a lovely couple and have worked hard to make it a 'home from home'. They left some treats for our dog and some for us too!

Tips:

Single Track (just a few mins by car) do lovely coffee and will let the dog in if it's well behaved and small. Ellishadder Art Cafe (near Kilt Rock) again lovely coffee and cakes. Fantastic cottage and location. Could have sat and relaxed the whole time but plenty to do around the island Having “ branded” liquid soap dispensers in kitchen and both bathrooms would be more in keeping with standard of rest of property. 13th October 2018:

Great cottage, very good location in one of the increasingly rare quiet parts of Skye. The cottage is modern but the renovation has been done sympathetically with it's origins. The panoramic windows in the day lounge and by the master bedroom en-suite bath are fantastic for watching the wildlife, sunsets and just enjoying the view to the outer Hebrides. Hosts were very friendly and helpful when we got confused by the heating system!!

Tips:

Good local cafe (at the Grand Designs featured house), great local artists too. The Old man of Storr and Uig are within 30 minutes drive. The location is ideal for exploring the mid and north of the isle. Great seafood at the Oyster Shed and good pub grub at the Old Inn, Carbost.

Thank you for your lovely feedback and excellent ratings. We are happy that we could turn the heating up as the temperature difference from Western Australia was notable!

13th May 2018:

Fantastic location and the croft is well equipped and there were nice surprising touches discovered on arrival. Would go back without hesitation, just pick the weather!

Tips:

Loch Bay - not cheap but very good Three Chimneys - not cheap bit very good Flodigarry Hotel - avoid the Cullen Skink more like, expensive and more like Halong Bay of potato in a sea of cream
