Mary's Thatched Cottages

4.9 (154 reviews)
26 Elgol Broadford Isle of Skye
Tel: 01471866275
Mary's Cottages are regarded as one of the top honeymoon locations. The cottages combine the traditional charm of 'black house' dwelling with modern comforts to ensure a wonderful stay on the Isle of Skye. Curtained box beds and cast iron stoves nestle beneath the cottages' thatched roofs and are complimented by modern additions such as fitted kitchens and under-floor heating. Each of the four cottages (Tigh Phadraig, Tigh Mairi, Tigh Lachie and Tigh Seonag) can sleep up to 4 with one cosy (king sized) boxed bed and two single beds in the gallery. The cottages are situated in the secluded small fishing village of Elgol. Down at the shore there is a small harbour where local fishing boats land their catches of lobster and langoustine among others. Boat trips run from the jetty into Loch Coruisk, in the heart of the Cuillins and there is extensive scope for a variety of outdoor pursuits.

Absolutely perfect place to stay. It really did make our wedding perfect and we didn't want to leave. The cottages are so cosy and the location is stunning. Couldn't have asked for more

Tips:

Keep an eye out for the deer (we saw them in the evening and early morning) such a treat seeing them so close to the cottages.

Thank you so much Mary and Drew for all of your help and generosity during our stay at one of your cottages last weekend. We felt very well cared for and attended to over and beyond what would be expected! The boys loved the cottage and said that they wished they could have spent their entire holiday there with you!

Tips:

The restaurant next door is quite excellent but better suited to adults and special occasion dinners. Drew was helpful is suggesting that occupants of the cottages either bring groceries or stop at the Co op in Broadford to stock up before traversing the single lane road to the cabins. The views are all one could ever hope for or imagine in Skye, and the walk over the hill to the small village below on the water where there are boat trips is quite an easy trek.

The cottages are a dream. Elgol is off the beaten track and a superb part of the Isle of Skye. The hosts were very helpful and the cottage has all the necessary modern amenities.

Tips:

It is entirely possible to be based in Elgol and explore all of Skye and the West coast as well as the Kyle of Lochalsh area. It is the place to stay if trekking is your type of holiday and you prefer nature instead of crowds...

Beautiful traditional thatched Skye cottage on the Stratheard peninsula - the most unspoiled part of the island with stunning views of the Cuillin Hills from Elgol. All amenities.

Tips:

Definitely don’t miss the boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk - and stay for at least 1.5 hours (better 3). The walk to Camasunary Beach is worth the effort - a stunning white sand beach with nobody there! The restaurant next door - Coruisk House- is a wonderful culinary experience and worth every penny. You won’t eat better anywhere in Scotland and Claire is a great hostess.

The most well appointed cottage we have stayed in. Had everything we needed. Lovely views from the front door and walking directly form the cottage. The owners were lovely and friendly but not too intrusive. Easy to get to the harbour for boat trips. Dog friendly accommodation.

Tips:

The restaurant next door is amazing! Never tasted such fresh well prepared food before. The owners and their dog (Ronnie) were so friendly and welcoming, such a relaxed atmosphere. The boat trips are well worth it. Visited the seal colony. Give wild camping a go but remember the midge nets in some places!

Beautiful very well equipped Mary & Drew have literally thought of everything you could possible need. My Dad and I and Charlie the dog had a lovely time would highly recommend a stay.

Tips:

I would recommend going down to the harbour early on in your stay. There are some lovely boat trips where you don’t have to drive very far to start your boat trip. The little cafe at the store/Village hall does lovely home made soups filled rolls and cakes. There are also some exercise classes on in the village hall in the evenings for those that like to exercise in holiday. A trip to Plockton is well worth a visit. This is where Hamish McBeth was filmed.

Mary and Drew are outstanding landlords. Stupidly, we did not buy provisions on the way through Broadford. Mary insisted in giving us everything we needed for our evening meal and breakfast. She was also really reluctant to take our replacement offering back. A fantastic croft, lovely landlords in a beautiful part of Scotland.

Tips:

Buy your provisions before you drive all the way to the croft. It is a long way back and there is only one (expensive and difficult to book) restaurant within a 40 minuted drive - it does happen to be right next door though.

Gorgeous cottages! A perfect place for a family of four with all the amenities in the sweetest of settings

Tips:

We went to marble pools with our twin 7 yos who loved splashing and booked a fancy lunch at three chimneys then saw the nearby castle which had a fun game of kids finding keys in every room. Good to cook and relax and do laundry in the hot weather we were lucky to enjoy!

30th May 2018:

We were surprised how big the cottage was inside, yet it was still cosy and very comfortable. We had everything we needed, except perhaps the provision of a small bbq would have been good, especially given the beautiful weather for the majority of our week. Mary and Drew made us very welcome and will be missed when they move to their new house. It was lovely talking to them. The welcome bottle of wine was a lovely touch. Thank you both for a wonderful holiday.

Tips:

The restaurant next to the cottage is very good, but expensive. It was a treat to go once during the week. Clare was an excellent host. At the other end of the scale, the fish and chips in Broadford were excellent, too. We arrived at the perfect time to eat there on the first day of our holiday before driving to the cottage. It was a pleasure to have lunch by the sea at Armadale. It is a super place to visit and everyone who had a shop there was very friendly. We also enjoyed pottering round Portree while Tim went on a boat to see the Sea Eagles. We enjoyed the magnificent scenery as much as anything.

We had a wonderful few days in the cottage & enjoyed the beautiful weather & fantastic scenery. Thank you so much for the kind welcome & the wine & Easter egg was a lovely surprise! We found the cottage very comfortable & would love to return again.

Tips:

Book ahead for a meal in the small hotel/restaurant next door. The menu is set but the food is first class. You can walk to the harbour for boat trips but the hill is quite steep for the return! Parking at the harbour is limited at busy times.

We had a wonderful time staying in Elgol. The cottage was very cosy and just the right size for a family of four. The gifts of Easter eggs and a bottle of wine on arrival was a welcome thought. Mary and Drew made us feel at home and we knew they were there to help if needed which was reassuring.

Tips:

The Misty isles boat trip to Loch Corruisk is well worthwhile and if you are confident walkers we would recommend the walk back to Elgol via the coastal path. Elgol is only an hour from Portree so is a good base for exploring the island. Check out the Aros centre in Portree for events and the Market Place restaurant for good food. Skye is such a beautiful island and there is plenty to do when you look for it.

We had a fantastic break at the cottage. It was very warm, welcoming, clean and tidy with everything you would need for a holiday. Mary and Drew are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them.

Tips:

Definitely book into Coruisk House for dinner. The pier is quite a long walk from the cottage but stunningly beautiful scenery compensates for that. Elgol is fairly remote and a great getaway from everything. We would definitely recommend a break to anyone.

Fantastic accommodation in a beautiful setting. The cottage is home from home and includes everything that you would need for a self catering holiday. Modern amenities but with an olde world charm. Highly recommended for the perfect break on the Isle of Skye.

Great for those wanting a quiet cottage to experience Skye. There is no mobile phone cover but that's a plus. Drew and Mary were great, they welcomed us on arrival, made sure we were ok and that we knew where to get them if needed and couldn't have been more helpful. The facilities in the cottage were great and all we needed for our holiday.

Tips:

Spar cave is worth the effort as is the boat trip to the Cuillins. Expect to drive a bit and be prepared to be patient due to less considerate drivers or Sheep/cows on the road. The restaurant next door is very good - mains are £25 so don't expect a super bargain but you get very good quality and we had no reservations about the price. keep your curtains open at night - we saw 2 deer looking in at us!

Tips:

Coruisk house, right next door (booking essential)is a very good restaurant. Around £70 per head with pre dinner drink and wine. Boat trips from Elgol are a good day out. Can be done one way if you wish to walk back from Coruisk. Blue shed cafe at Torrin is also good for a coffee etc.

Lovely cosy cottages in a stunning location. It is ideal for families. We came with friends and rented three houses. The children just loved to run around outside. It is an enclosed very safe place. We happily let our children (5 and 7) sleep upstairs. The ladder went up during the day and during nighttime we left a small light on and there is a hatch that you can close. We had a fantastic holiday!

Tips:

There is lots to do directly around Elgol. Two caves within walking distance, a beach where you can find fossils, an "easier " munroe (Blaven), nice walks and boat trips. We liked the little café/shop in Elgol behind the townhouse. Good coffee and yummy cakes. And the Blue Shed Cafe is very good for lunch with a great view.

We would recommend the cottages to friends.

We really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful holiday cottages , warm and welcoming. The welcome bottle of wine was a lovely touch. Very well organised booking process and great information for us well in advance . The cottages have really been finished to a very high standard while maintaining beautiful character , lovely toddler blow up beds for our twins with cosy blankets supplied which was just lovely. The whole area is really stunning.

Tips:

Boat trips from Elgol which is nearby are a must do. Walks around the area of Kilbride and Kilchrist are amazing. While only 14 miles from Broadford it is a slow drive to Elgol on single track roads on which you will meet a lot of traffic, so keep that in mind if you have already driven a long way to Skye or travelling to other parts of Skye. But there is a local bus service from Broadford which is brilliant!

Spacious and comfortable. A great retreat on a wet day and a lovely place to come home to after a physically exhausting day. Elgol has probably the most magnificent and stunning views in the whole of Scotland. If only they could be seen from the actual cottage. High point: the wonderful under-floor heating. If there was any disappointment it was the somewhat cupboard-like double bed. But perhaps this was a planning requirement to make the blackhouse authentic. Many thanks for a memorable week for all the right reasons.

Thanks - you were great, the cottage was lovely and Elgol was brilliant. Just one little niggle was that we were looking for a two-bedroom place so as to have that extra sense of space and though the upstairs was nice it wasn't easy of access etc. But otherwise no complaints and thanks for directing us to the 'marble pools' which we would never have found otherwise.

This was our second visit to Mary's Cottages, our first being 15 years ago on our honeymoon soon after they had opened. The cottage and location is still just as beautiful and Mary and Drew kindly accommodated our 4 children as well as us this time! It was a bit of a squeeze but they all loved it and really enjoyed the mezzanine bedroom. We were also given lots of locals tips for good walks to do with the children. Lovely location, tidy and romantic cottage with everything you need in it and wonderful, friendly hosts.

A beatuful cottage in a beautiful setting. Well appointed and the underfloor heating was a real treat. We only had one small issue during our stay - a problem with the sound on the TV - but this was sorted almost as soon as we reported it. The welcoming bottle of wine was a lovely touch.

Tips:

Elgol is a beautiful location. However, visitors should be aware that it is quite remote, so to travel to anywhere else on the island involves a thirty minute journey to Broadford before being able to go anywhere else. That said, the cottage was the perfect location to embark on boat trips from Elgol Harbour - we did two fantastic trips with Bella Jane to Loch Coruisk and Canna. As long as you don't mind the driving, trips to the Old Man of Storr and Neist Point are a must when visiting Skye.

17th May 2016:

Very warm and welcoming, wonderful setting. Very well-equipped kitchen. The only slightly negative feature is that there is no skylight window in the loft which makes that area rather dark. I know its hard because of the thatched roof, and it also spoils the "original look" but it is possible and could be made to face away from the road / drive. It really would make a huge difference. The lighting generally could be a little warmer, but this is really a minor issue. Thanks so much for everything! We really loved staying with you and hope to be back!

Tips:

I'm sure you know all the usuals, but one interesting geographic feature on the Island was the "Fairy Glen" southeast of Uig at Balnaknock - it wasn't in our guidebook, but it was pretty neat. Also, if the weather is good, its worth going to the Fairy pools in the evening. The walk is easy, there were virtually no tourists there at around 20:00, and the light during sunset was fabulous. The Co-Op in Broadford is significantly better than the one in Kyle of Lochalsh and really has everything you could wish for. The filling station also had better rates than the ones along the A82/A87. If you plan on eating in Uig, you should rather pack food than risk the local eateries. We went to three, left two immediately, finally settled for the last one ... and regretted it.

Tips:

Coruisk House right next door to the cottages is a must for a truly unforgettable dining experience. Visit Loch Coruisk on one of the boat trips from Elgol pier and take a picnic to eat loch side (just be mindful not to take large dogs due to the grated metal steps at the other end). Visit the amazing fairy pools to photograph how the light reflects the vivid colours (it's worth the walk), and ssshh...don't tell anyone but Claigan Coral Beach will take your breath away.

1st September 2015:

Mary's Thatched Cottages are perfectly situated for access straight into the Cullins. So many beautiful walks and for us Elgol is the best area on the Isle of Skye. The cottages are stunning and are perfectly equipped. My husband and I had a fantastic week and we would highly recommend this to all off our friends especially those with children who would find the mezzanine level in the cottage just magical.

Tips:

Coruisk House Restaurant with rooms is located right next door to Mary's Thatched Cottages and serves excellent food. Booking in advance is necessary as they only do a limited number of covers per evening. Claire's home made bread and chocolates can also be pre ordered and are fab. Hight recommend the black treacle bread!!

The roses and champagne was very much appreciated, we felt welcome, great atmosphere.

Tips:

Walk around Loch Coruisk, allow 4 hrs. Go to Spar's cave at low tide. Its a slow road from Broadford so stock up so you don't need to pop out for anything.

It was an excellent venue for exploring the Elgol peninsular, and particularly well equipped. It was fabulous to get back from a soaking to the warmth and comfort of the cottage.

Tips:

The restaurant next door, Coruisk has a mouth watering menu and friendly welcome.I found the walks around Kilmarie house very enjoyable and I think the dog did too!

Excellent self catering accommodation owned and operated by people with an eye for detail, in, to the client, a very relaxed and welcoming way.

Tips:

Get a fast rib ride from Elgol to Loch Scavaig and having moved quietly among the seals and their pups, ask the helmsman ro open her up and do some 'donuts' on the way back. Kids and parents will love it.

Really enjoyed our stay - cottage was charming and immaculately presented and equipped. We were very impressed by the cleanliness, furnishing and tranquility of the cottage - simply perfect. The welcome gift of a bottle of wine was also greatly appreciated, and got our staff off to a great start - so, thank you for that too. Would not hesitate to come back and to unreservedly recommend the cottages to all and sundry.

Tips:

Recommend a walk around Elgol and finishing at the shop for some coffee and home baking. We also had a wonderful meal at the small restaurant next door to the Cottages (Coriusk), which offered a quaint setting and truly excellent food - booking is a must.

Fabulous cottage. We arrived late and the lights were on waiting for us when we arrived. Beautifully warm inside and every you would need. Very comfortable and clean bedding, lounge and kitchen . Excellent selection of cooking utensils, everything you would need and plenty of essentials ie. washing powder etc. Cottage was a little bit of drive away from any kind of civilisation but what a drive, beautiful scenery and well worth the drive. We were looking for a two night stay which is hard to find in Skye and Mary and Drew were fabulous from start to finish, couldn't recommend them highly enough!!

We really enjoyed our time there as Mary and Drew are so kind and helpful. The accommodation is unique and really clean, it has everything you would need to enjoy your stay there. All furnishings are very clean and comfy. Also it is very private and has it's own entrance with electric gates making you feel exclusive.Beautifully landscaped and tranquil. A real must to recharge your batteries.

Tips:

Bring a good pair of walking boots as there are many beautiful walks to do. We also used the Seaplane from Broadford Aerodrome which was thrilling going over the Cuilllings. We also did the Portree Sea Eagle trip on the boat and got a fantastic picture of one landing by the boat. Misty Isle boat trips from Elgol is a must do as you get to hear local Legends and History of the area.We ate one evening in Coruisk restaurant next to the cottages which has fresh and local sourced produce. Or there is Cafe Sia in Broadford that also do good food. The Blue Shed Cafe in Torrin has Amazing Cakes. But there are 2 Cafes in Elgol that also do great food cakes and drinks. There is also Deer that roam around the Cottages to add to the thrill.

14th May 2015:

Drew and Mary were very friendly and helpful, we felt we could contact them at any time ,before we arrived, and during our stay. The cottage was very warm and cosy. at all times. With regard to regulation of the heating, when the thermostat was at the half way point this in general suited heat wise. When making it cooler than this, I found it hard to be clear on whether to turn dial to right or left. The supply of books, DVDs and CDs was much appreciated. Best Wishes, Ann

Tips:

Lots of good walking from the Cottage, but in order to explore more distant parts of Skye such as Old Man of Sorr, the Quirang or Glen Brittle the drive to Elgol was an "interesting" start and finish drive. Best wishes Mike

Couldn't have been happier with our stay at Tigh Seaonag, one of Mary's Thatched Cottages. The cottage itself was lovely and cosy, the underfloor heating is a lovely touch - no cold toes! Facilities are great, we had everything we needed. It was great to stay somewhere so unique and charming - we are totally confident we chose the perfect getaway. Mary and her family have clearly put a lot of love into their venture and having spoken to Mary it's so lovely to see someone who clearly loves what they do.

Tips:

We had a lovely meal at Coruisk House next door and would definitely recommend it. We had booked a boat trip from the harbour (30mins walk from the cottage) which unfortunately was cancelled because of poor weather but certainly seemed like a fun thing to do in the area.

2nd November 2014:

The postcard and bottle of wine awaiting us on arrival were a lovely touch! Appreciated Drew popping in to say hello, it was lovely to meet you! They were quick to answer any queries, and even generously offered my husband the use of their kitchen table when we had wifi connection issues. Also appreciated them finding my son's teddy and sending it back to us. Thanks again!

Tips:

Broadford is a great base to do shopping before heading out to Elgol. It is a bit out of the way, but the drive through spectacular scenery is worth it. This was our 4th trip up to Skye and we still haven't managed decent weather, but did manage to get out and see Sleat and up to Portree. Aros Centre at Portree is a great facility with decent lunches, and the coffee shop in Broadford, while expensive, does live up to its moniker of the best coffee on Skye!

Tips:

We are a family of four with two teenage boys who have not visited Skye before. A thoroughly awesome island. We climbed Bla Bheinn and would recommend the boat trips from Elgol with a walk up Loch Coruisk. A good mountain biking trip over to Camanasury and over to Sligachachan. Good pizzas at Cafesia in Broadgord.

Lovely, unusual cottages with all you need for a stay on Skye. Mary and Drew are lovely and very helpful.

Tips:

The restaurant next door is lovely and the only local restaurant. Elgol is a wonderful place to go to escape everything including a phone signal. A great place to access walks and boat trips and local fetes. If lots of choice of restaurants and shops is your thing Elgol may not be for you!
